On December 22, China achieved a remarkable feat by independently designing and constructing the world's first methanol dual-fuel intelligent VLCC, named "Kaito," which was successfully delivered in Dalian, Liaoning Province. This eighth-generation VLCC, developed solely by CSSC Dalian Shipbuilding, stretches approximately 333 meters in length and boasts a crude oil carrying capacity of around 2.1 million barrels. Certified by the China Classification Society, the vessel stands out for its exceptional seaworthiness, outstanding port adaptability, minimal emissions, and intelligent operational capabilities. It is destined to ply the Middle East-Far East route in the future.
In terms of propulsion, the ship is outfitted with a domestically manufactured methanol dual-fuel main engine and a methanol fuel supply system. Compared to traditional fuels, this setup enables a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by up to 92% and sulfur oxide emissions by 99%. Moreover, the vessel is equipped with cutting-edge, domestically developed intelligent platforms for ships, intelligent cargo control systems, and intelligent engine room operation and maintenance systems. These innovations enhance the economic efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of the vessel's intelligent operations.
During the design and construction phases, the project team achieved an impressive 71 patent outcomes. Multiple indicators of the vessel surpassed the design specifications, and the delivery was completed four months ahead of the contract schedule, marking a testament to China's prowess in shipbuilding and innovation.
