Mark Kern, the former producer of the globally renowned game "World of Warcraft," took to social media to highlight Tencent's colossal presence in the gaming industry. He pointed out that Tencent's revenue generated outside of China outstrips that of industry giants such as Electronic Arts (EA), Roblox, and the creators of GTA. Kern emphasized Tencent's knack for identifying promising game studios and offering them robust support, typically without meddling in their day-to-day operations. This approach, he argued, has led Tencent to achieve remarkable success in areas where Western game companies have often stumbled in their acquisition endeavors.
For instance, Kern noted that EA has a tendency to stifle the creativity of original intellectual properties (IPs) and studios post-acquisition, attempting to integrate them into the 'EA Studios' fold. In contrast, Tencent adopts a more hands-off approach, finding ways to empower studios to continue their innovative development without imposing a 'Tencent Studios' identity upon them. Responding to Kern's insights, Musk commented that Tencent indeed possesses "very good taste."
