Yesterday, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) unveiled its most recent financial report, which disclosed a direct loss amounting to £196 million (equivalent to roughly RMB 1.832 billion) in the third quarter of 2025. This loss stemmed from a cyber attack. The attack was initiated on September 2, when the hacker collective known as 'Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters' managed to infiltrate JLR's systems. As a consequence, three factories in the UK were forced to cease operations. This led to 33,000 employees being placed on leave, and production was disrupted for a period of up to five weeks.

The ramifications of this incident were far-reaching. Not only did it lead to substantial financial losses for JLR, but it also resulted in partial data breaches. Moreover, the attack had a ripple effect on 5,000 businesses across the UK, and even had a negative impact on the broader macroeconomy. In response to this crisis, the UK government stepped in by providing a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to facilitate JLR's resumption of operations. Eventually, on October 8, the company was able to restart production in a phased manner.
