On November 11, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in South Korea convened a deliberative session to discuss Google's application for the transfer of high-precision map data. During the meeting, it was mandated that Google must submit a supplementary application by February 5, 2026. Consequently, deliberations on the matter were suspended until that date. Previously, Google had indicated its willingness to comply with certain restrictions, such as those pertaining to coordinate display. However, it had failed to submit an additional supplementary application that encompassed the relevant details. Owing to the discrepancies between Google's public statements and the information provided in its application documents, the Ministry encountered difficulties in conducting a precise review.
In February of the current year, Google submitted an application seeking permission to incorporate high-precision maps with a scale of 1:5000 into its South Korean applications and to transfer the corresponding data to overseas servers. Presently, Google utilizes maps with a scale of 1:25000 in South Korea. In contrast, high-precision maps with a scale of 1:5000 offer a significantly more detailed representation.
