On October 22, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) made an announcement, stating its intention to follow in the EU's footsteps and classify Apple and Google as entities subject to regulation. As a result, these two tech giants could potentially face hefty fines. Previously, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the UK would incorporate relevant provisions from the EU's Digital Markets Act. The only distinction lay in the terminology used to refer to the regulated entities. The EU terms them as 'gatekeepers,' whereas the UK's Competition and Markets Authority opts for 'Strategic Market Status' (SMS) to characterize large technology firms. At present, the specific criteria for designating Apple and Google as SMS entities remain undisclosed. Meanwhile, Amazon and Microsoft have not been brought within the purview of this regulatory framework.
