For a considerable period, high-performance perovskite solar cells have predominantly depended on lead elements. This reliance, however, has raised significant environmental and health concerns due to lead's toxicity. Now, a groundbreaking achievement has been made by the research team led by Liang Jia from Fudan University. They have successfully developed tin-based perovskite solar cells that are entirely non-hazardous throughout their entire lifecycle. These innovative solar cells have achieved an impressive photoelectric conversion efficiency of 17.7%, setting a new world record in the field of lead-free, sustainable green photovoltaic technology.
