According to Huron Consulting Group, due to a continuous decline in student enrollment, up to 370 private universities in the United States are expected to face closure or merger in the next decade. This projected figure is more than three times the number of non-profit private universities that closed in the decade prior to 2020, as recorded by the National Center for Education Statistics. The shrinking student population stems from the nationwide decline in birth rates starting in 2007. The anticipated university closures and mergers are expected to affect approximately 600,000 students and involve around $18 billion in endowment funds. Huron Consulting declined to disclose the names of the schools projected to close or merge but noted that these institutions are facing severe financial pressures.
