On Thursday, South Korea's data protection authority imposed a record fine of 134.8 billion won (approximately $96.9 million) on SK Telecom, stemming from a massive data breach that compromised the personal information of 23 million users. This penalty marks the largest ever imposed by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) since its inception in 2020. Earlier this year, in April, SK Telecom disclosed a significant leak of subscriber identity module data stored on its servers. In response, the company offered free replacement services to affected users and subsequently underwent rigorous regulatory investigations.
