OpenAI unveiled the 'StarGate' Norway project on July 31st, signaling the establishment of its inaugural AI data center in the European continent. Designed and built by Nscale, this groundbreaking venture is co-owned by a joint enterprise comprising Nscale and Norwegian giant Aker. Nestled in Narvik, Norway, the data center capitalizes on the region's extensive hydropower reserves and temperate climate, aiming to deploy 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by 2026's close. Initially boasting a power capacity of 230 megawatts, the facility plans to expand its capacity by an additional 290 megawatts. Running entirely on renewable energy, the data center employs advanced liquid cooling technology to optimize its cooling efficiency and repurposes waste heat to bolster local low-carbon enterprises.
