The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked a significant surge in electricity demand and price increases in Pennsylvania. In response, the governor has issued an urgent call for the expedited construction of new power plants and enhanced grid transparency. However, the expansion of the grid has encountered delays due to an influx of applications for renewable energy projects, some of which have been stymied by local opposition. Despite PJM's efforts to expedite the connection of over 50 power projects and implement price caps, the majority of these projects are not anticipated to become operational until the early 2030s. Projections indicate that the state will require an additional 32 gigawatts of power generation capacity by 2030, with 30 gigawatts earmarked specifically for new data centers.
