On January 3, the team led by Barclays analyst William Thompson unveiled a comprehensive report, encapsulating a roughly 70-page study mandated by Congress and conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy. The report underscores that current projections significantly underestimate the power consumption of artificial intelligence. It forecasts an annual growth rate of 13-27% in U.S. data center power demand (excluding cryptocurrency operations) from 2023 onwards, anticipating a surge to 325-580 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2028. This anticipated demand would represent a substantial portion of the nation's total power requirements, ranging between 6.7% and 12%.
