On November 4, Google announced plans to invest $15 billion to expand its data center and cloud computing operations in Malaysia, aiming to meet the digital infrastructure demands driven by the AI boom. In a statement released on Wednesday, Google said it will build new computing facilities and invest in local water security, power generation, and workforce skills training. The related investments will be rolled out between 2027 and 2028. Google joins a wave of global tech companies expanding their footprint in Malaysia. With lower operating costs, reliable infrastructure, and a strategic location near business hubs such as Singapore, the country has become a major data center hub in Southeast Asia, attracting companies like Oracle and Amazon. These companies are all seeking to expand data storage and processing capacity to meet demand from a growing number of AI service users. Google said construction of the new campus over the next two years is expected to contribute $1.1 billion to Malaysia's economy and support more than 37,000 local jobs annually. Once the data center is operational, it is expected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs each year, spanning roles such as technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, and logistics and security management personnel.
