According to unnamed South Korean officials, in the wake of recent cyberattacks targeting the financial sector, South Korea's National Intelligence Service has directed approximately 2,100 central and local government institutions to carry out emergency security inspections. On October 22, the agency instructed these institutions to conduct self-assessments using a checklist, with a focus on externally facing systems, security monitoring, and the deployment of security patches. Meanwhile, the National Intelligence Service is separately examining security vulnerabilities in key IT infrastructure across the public sector, with the related inspections scheduled for completion by mid-November. In addition, South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has been conducting security vulnerability inspections of 111 institutions since late October; these institutions are responsible for managing approximately 170 critical information and communication infrastructure sites in the private sector.
