OpenAI has pledged that, under this project, it can reduce up to 1 gigawatt of electricity load when the power grid requires load relief—roughly equivalent to the consumption of 700,000 households. In a blog post on November 2, OpenAI said its goal is to make this kind of load-adjustment capability a core component of the construction and operation of future data center campuses, and that it will negotiate with utility companies to determine the scale of reducible load, response speed, and duration. Plans will vary by campus, with details to be announced separately once finalized.
