The progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers has spurred heightened anticipation for copper demand. However, at a recent industry summit, seasoned analysts cautioned that complex calculation biases and the advent of technological substitutions might lead to actual copper consumption in the computing power sector falling below projections. On one hand, AI data centers exhibit an enormous appetite for copper. For instance, each megawatt of AI training data center can devour up to 47 tons of copper. Coupled with the soaring demand for high-end copper foils tailored for AI servers, the demand for copper is experiencing further expansion. On the other hand, technological strides, such as diminished chip energy consumption and the shift from copper cables to fiber optics, could potentially diminish the need for copper. Furthermore, challenges related to grid connectivity might also impede the speed of AI data center construction, consequently influencing copper demand.
