Google has announced plans to invest €13 billion in Finland for the construction of an artificial intelligence data center. However, prior to completing the requisite environmental impact assessment, the tech giant proceeded to clear approximately 530 hectares (about 1,300 acres) of forest in the Muhos and Kajaani regions. This preemptive action has sparked discontent among local residents and environmental groups.
Local residents have voiced concerns, noting that the deforestation has resulted in the destruction of wildlife habitats. Consequently, wolves have begun venturing into nearby villages in search of food, raising significant safety issues. In response to these developments, Finnish regulators issued a directive in October, urging Google to halt construction activities at the two sites. They also demanded an immediate cessation of any operations that substantially alter the environment within a stipulated timeframe, warning of penalties for non-compliance.
Google has since issued an apology for the premature deforestation and assured compliance with regulatory demands. The company is also committed to advancing the environmental assessment process while adhering to all necessary guidelines.
