The Earth System Numerical Forecasting Center of the China Meteorological Administration, in collaboration with Sugon, has made a groundbreaking announcement: China’s independently developed next-generation weather-climate integrated model (MCV) has achieved a major milestone. For the first time, this model has attained a global resolution of 5 kilometers, with the capability to generate 10-day forecasts within just 1 hour of computational time. This achievement not only meets the stringent timeliness requirements but also surpasses the resolution offered by international mainstream systems, such as the European Centre’s Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). Additionally, it outperforms China’s previous-generation model, aligning perfectly with the global 5-kilometer resolution goal outlined in the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan.
The MCV model has undergone significant advancements, including heterogeneous transformations and code integration of key components like dynamics and physics. By leveraging OpenACC technology, the model has achieved “one code, two operations,” ensuring consistent accuracy through rigorous closed-loop verification processes. Furthermore, utilizing the domestically produced 100,000-card AI supercomputer, Dawn 8000, the MCV model has successfully integrated high-precision scientific computing with low-precision intelligent computing. This integration has enabled the model to conduct global 3-kilometer resolution simulation experiments, marking a significant leap forward in meteorological modeling capabilities.
