On September 11, reports emerged indicating that Microsoft intends to significantly bolster its global data center capacity, aiming to surpass 38 gigawatts by 2032. This ambitious goal represents a more than threefold increase from the current capacity, which stands at approximately 12 gigawatts. The expansion is a strategic response to the computing power deficit resulting from the burgeoning AI and cloud sectors in recent years. Owing to capacity limitations, Microsoft has been compelled to decline certain AI and cloud service projects. According to reports, Microsoft's data center expansion strategy encompasses both self-constructed facilities and leased data centers, excluding computing power sourced from "emerging cloud service providers" like CoreWeave. Nevertheless, the plan remains flexible and may undergo adjustments based on customer demands and technological advancements. In the latest fiscal year, Microsoft's capital expenditures soared to $145 billion, with analysts projecting continued growth in future spending. Previously, Microsoft's temporary halt on some data center constructions led to a constrained computing power supply, prompting some customers to migrate to rival services. The company also imposed restrictions on new cloud service subscriptions in select key regions across the United States and Europe. At present, Microsoft is expediting its data center construction efforts to meet the escalating demand.
