On September 4, 2026, the Thai government issued an order to suspend 49 ongoing data center construction projects. This move came ahead of the introduction of new regulatory measures. Danucha Pichayanan, the Secretary-General of Thailand's National Economic and Social Development Council, revealed that the new regulations are slated to be unveiled within the coming month. These regulations are designed to set comprehensive and unified regulatory standards, thereby fostering sustainable growth within the industry.
In the first half of 2026, Thailand gave the green light to 88 projects related to AI and data centers, with a cumulative investment reaching 886 billion Thai baht. This figure has eclipsed the total investment scale for the entire year of 2025. Concurrently, the Thai government is contemplating an increase in electricity prices specifically for large-scale data center operators. Additionally, it plans to intensify the scrutiny of related projects situated in densely populated regions.
