On September 1, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources close to the matter, reported that Anthropic had entered into a cloud computing agreement worth a staggering $35 billion with Lambda, a cloud computing provider backed by NVIDIA. NVIDIA holds the lease for the relevant data center and, just a few weeks prior, signed an agreement with Hut 8 to ensure access to the data center's computing capabilities. This setup underscores NVIDIA's pivotal role in facilitating access to costly computing resources for non-investment-grade companies like Anthropic.

Moreover, the deal empowers Lambda, an emerging cloud provider, to secure lucrative contracts with Anthropic without the need to independently acquire data center space. Lambda will leverage the data center currently under development by Hut 8 and utilize chips procured from NVIDIA, which also happens to be an investor in Lambda. At present, the specific fees that Lambda is required to pay NVIDIA remain undisclosed. Following a bottleneck in computing power supply earlier this year, Anthropic has been actively pursuing cloud capacity agreements to keep pace with its growing needs.
