Cloudflare has recently implemented substantial optimizations to the cache memory of its 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver. By refining the software storage approach, the company successfully liberated approximately 100TB of memory, all without the need for hardware replacements. This optimization was primarily focused on the DNS cache data structure. Through refactoring the Rust codebase, Cloudflare managed to reduce memory usage per cache entry from 953 bytes to 420 bytes, marking a 56% decrease. Concurrently, the speeds of cache writing and reading were also enhanced, with cache insertion throughput witnessing a 43% increase and query latency experiencing a 19% reduction.
