Microsoft has suspended the developer accounts responsible for maintaining several renowned open-source projects, without providing any prior notice. Moreover, these accounts cannot be swiftly reinstated, thereby obstructing the release of new versions and security patches for the related projects aimed at Windows users. The projects affected encompass WireGuard, VeraCrypt, MemTest86, among others. Developers reported that they received no emails or warnings, were kept in the dark regarding the reasons behind the bans, and were unable to lodge appeals. Furthermore, their attempts to contact customer support were met with silence. Following TechCrunch's coverage of this matter, a Microsoft vice president responded, explaining that these accounts were automatically banned for failing the "mandatory account verification process required for all partners in the Windows Hardware Program." He also asserted that email notifications had been dispatched since October 2025. However, when Bleeping Computer reached out to Microsoft for comment, they received no response. Hanselman mentioned that the issue would be "rectified shortly," yet failed to elucidate the reason for the absence of notifications. Idrassi and Windscribe confirmed that Hanselman had indeed aided in the restoration of the accounts and believed that posts on social media and interviews with the media had spurred Microsoft's response.
