Why is space computing power gaining momentum? Zhao Ce, Deputy Director-General of the Information and Communication Development Department at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), highlighted its key advantages: on-orbit real-time processing, low energy consumption, and extensive coverage. These benefits not only enhance space energy exploration but also strengthen global connectivity, anti-interference capabilities, and the scalability of network applications—all of which hold significant strategic and industrial potential. Reports indicate that by 2035, the global market for on-orbit data centers is expected to reach USD 39 billion, growing at a compound annual rate of 67.4%.

Zhao Ce emphasized that MIIT will prioritize systematic planning and forward-looking strategies to deepen industrial development and foster collaborative growth in the space computing power sector. Key initiatives include:

  • Evaluating technological advancements and industry trends to guide policy formulation for space computing infrastructure and applications.
  • Accelerating R&D in satellite-mounted radiation-hardened chips and inter-satellite laser communication technologies.
  • Exploring practical applications such as real-time remote sensing processing, communication network enhancement, and spatiotemporal data services to drive ecosystem maturation.
