Maine is advancing legislation to temporarily halt the approval of large-scale data center projects with installed capacity exceeding 20 megawatts until November 2027, potentially becoming the first U.S. state to implement such a state-level 'moratorium.' The state's House of Representatives has already passed the bill, which is now under review by the Senate. Democratic Governor Janet Mills has expressed support but hopes to amend it. The bill also establishes a committee to assess the economic opportunities of data centers, as well as their risks to electricity and the environment. Industry groups say this would be the first statewide moratorium on data center construction in the United States.
