Several current and former Microsoft executives revealed on social platforms that Microsoft is restarting an internal project that has been shelved for years, aiming to reconstruct the performance and resource usage of Windows 11 from the ground up, including reducing system idle memory usage and disk space usage after a fresh installation. Microsoft plans to improve system responsiveness and multitasking capabilities, as well as enhance hardware compatibility, through measures such as optimizing memory management, migrating core experiences to the WinUI 3 framework, and upgrading File Explorer and search functions. These improvements are expected to be gradually rolled out through incremental updates by 2026.
