SpaceX CEO Musk and OpenAI CEO Altman have differing views on the issue of space-based data centers. Musk has prioritized the development of space-based data centers, while Altman believes that, under current technology, building data centers in space is absurd. Although it may be feasible in the future, obstacles such as launch costs and maintenance difficulties make it difficult to achieve large-scale application within a decade. Previously, Musk stated that orbital data centers are a goal, and SpaceX announced plans to launch an orbital data center constellation composed of millions of satellites, recruiting engineers for this purpose, and claimed that the acquisition of xAI would accelerate deployment. Additionally, Google is also planning space-based data centers, with the potential to send solar-powered data centers into space as early as 2027. Traditional data centers face significant issues such as water resource consumption, and proposed data center parks in various locations have faced opposition from local communities.
