According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Nippon Electric Company (NEC) has made an official announcement regarding the discontinuation of its efforts to develop wireless base stations that adhere to 4G and 5G communication standards. NEC's President, Takayuki Morita, explicitly stated that the company would cease any further investment in this particular domain, effectively signaling NEC's formal withdrawal from the global base station market.
In the past, NEC had set an ambitious target, aiming to secure 20% of the global base station market share by the year 2030. However, this once - promising goal has now been completely dashed.
NEC's decision to pull out of this market is a clear reflection of the overall downturn experienced by Japan's telecommunications equipment industry. At present, the global base station market is predominantly controlled by three major players. Chinese company Huawei, Swedish firm Ericsson, and Finnish corporation Nokia together account for approximately 80% of the market share. In stark contrast, Japanese companies collectively hold a meager share of less than 2% in this highly competitive market.
