On Monday, the European Union announced the launch of three distinct investigations into the cloud computing services provided by Amazon and Microsoft. The aim is to determine whether these businesses warrant tighter oversight under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Two of these inquiries will delve into whether Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure qualify as 'gatekeepers'—a designation typically reserved for companies meeting specific quantitative criteria, which AWS and Azure currently do not fulfill. The third investigation aims to assess the effectiveness of the existing DMA framework in curbing anticompetitive behavior within Europe's cloud computing landscape.

The EU's antitrust chief underscored that these investigations would scrutinize whether DMA regulations require updating, highlighting the pivotal role cloud computing plays in bolstering Europe's AI capabilities and overall digital competitiveness. AWS contends that additional regulations are unwarranted, whereas Microsoft has pledged its cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

Should AWS or Microsoft Azure be classified as 'gatekeepers,' the affected companies would be mandated to adhere to DMA rules within a six-month timeframe. This move underscores the EU's commitment to asserting greater control over digital infrastructure, with the investigation's findings poised to significantly influence the strategic approaches of global tech behemoths operating in Europe.
