On November 18th (note: "announced on Tuesday" is a bit redundant with the specific date given, so it's omitted for conciseness), Eviden, a subsidiary of the French IT conglomerate Atos, revealed that it had, in collaboration with the U.S. chip giant AMD (AMD.O), won a contract to build a state-of-the-art supercomputer in Europe. This initiative aims to help the continent reduce the technological chasm that currently exists between it and the United States. The supercomputer, named in honor of the renowned French computer scientist Alice Recoque, will find its home in France, with construction slated to kick off by the end of 2026. Eviden emphasized that this will mark Europe's second exascale supercomputer, following only Germany's Jupiter, and the total cost of the project is projected to soar to 554 million euros (roughly equivalent to $642.5 million) over a span of five years.
