The European Union's antitrust authorities are gearing up to scrutinize the market dominance of cloud computing platforms. Major players like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud could soon find themselves subject to the regulations outlined in the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The cloud computing sector has previously been marred by significant service disruptions, underscoring the systemic dangers of relying too heavily on a handful of cloud service providers.
Historically, the world's leading cloud service providers were temporarily exempt from DMA constraints. This exemption stemmed from the fact that their business operations were predominantly carried out through enterprise-level agreements, rendering it challenging to accurately tally the number of users.
The upcoming investigation will evaluate whether, despite the difficulty in quantifying user numbers, major cloud service operators ought to be bound by additional responsibilities. These responsibilities could include improving interoperability and ensuring easier data portability. Should cloud services fall within the purview of the DMA, companies that fail to comply will face hefty fines, akin to those previously levied against Apple and Meta.
