To address the soaring electricity demands of AI data centers, NextEra, the preeminent renewable energy company in the United States, has secured approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to revive the Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Station in Iowa. The facility is anticipated to be reconnected to the grid and resume electricity generation as early as the end of 2028. This marks the third nuclear power station to embark on the restart journey, following Michigan's Palisades Nuclear Power Plant (expected to commence operations this year) and Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant (scheduled to resume in 2027). It may also be the final mothballed reactor eligible for such a restart.
