Scientists have unveiled a groundbreaking ultra-thin protective coating dubbed "Cosmic Veil," designed to bolster the resilience of perovskite solar cells in the harsh space environment. Composed of propane-1,3-diammonium iodide (PDAI2), this innovative coating fortifies the organic molecular structure within the cells, effectively mitigating decomposition triggered by cosmic radiation. As a result, it not only decelerates performance degradation but also minimizes internal damage. Experimental data from a simulated low Earth orbit environment, featuring high-intensity proton radiation, reveals that solar cells equipped with the "Cosmic Veil" coating exhibit a markedly slower rate of efficiency decline and significantly reduced structural damage. This pioneering development offers a lighter, more cost-effective, and highly efficient alternative for spacecraft solar energy systems.
