The UK manufacturing sector gradually inched closer to recovery in July, as optimism among business executives surged to a five-month high. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing advanced for the fourth straight month, reaching 48.0, which represents the smallest contraction since January. Notably, output of consumer goods and intermediate goods resumed growth, and future output expectations soared to their highest point of the year. Nonetheless, the employment index declined, and the pressure of escalating labor costs persisted, hinting at potential further strain on the job market in the coming months.
