The launch of TSMC's second semiconductor fabrication plant in Kumamoto, Japan, has been postponed from the originally planned end of 2027 to the first half of 2029. This delay is attributed to geopolitical issues and infrastructure challenges. Transportation issues further complicated the project, pushing back the groundbreaking ceremony to the second half of 2025.

The first Kumamoto plant, which commenced mass production at the end of 2024, specializes in the manufacture of automotive logic chips and image sensors. The Japanese government has provided significant subsidies to bolster this initiative; however, the postponement has injected additional uncertainty into Japan's semiconductor industry.
