Huawei intends to shift its focus from Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) to General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) chip design, with the goal of bolstering its presence in China's AI chip market. Currently, NVIDIA's GPGPU enjoys widespread popularity in mainland China, attributed to its robust CUDA ecosystem and versatile applicability. While Huawei's current Ascend AI chips, being ASICs, excel in specific AI tasks, they fall short in general-purpose computing, double-precision floating-point support, and software ecosystem diversity. Reports indicate that Huawei's upcoming AI chips will either offer CUDA-compatible software or leverage the functional models of NVIDIA and AMD chips, thereby broadening their utility in general-purpose computing applications.
