In June 2025, SoftBank and Nokia successfully embarked on Japan's maiden outdoor communication trial utilizing the 7GHz band. This frequency band is anticipated to be proposed for 6G use at the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2027. In contrast to the n104 band employed in 5G, the 7GHz band boasts more abundant bandwidth resources, presenting substantial potential for 6G applications. Throughout the trial, SoftBank installed three pre-commercial 7GHz base stations in Ginza, Tokyo, and assessed the 6G network's coverage capabilities in urban settings, complemented by advanced massive MIMO technology.
