The United States Department of Justice has confirmed the arrest of Chinese citizen Xu Zewei in Italy. Upon the request of American prosecutors, Xu Zewei was apprehended by Italian authorities shortly after his arrival at Milan Malpensa Airport. Xu Zewei, who is alleged to be an active contract hacker, faces nine charges related to a cyberattack on American universities in February 2020. The attack, reportedly carried out in collaboration with another fugitive Chinese citizen, Zhang Yu, involved the hacking and theft of vital COVID-19 research data. Xu Zewei is currently detained in an Italian prison while awaiting extradition proceedings. Both his family and defense attorneys maintain his innocence and intend to challenge the extradition request.
