On June 21, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced an extension of the cobalt export ban for an additional three months, triggering a notable surge in cobalt prices on June 23. Spot prices for Yangtze River 1# cobalt soared by RMB 22,000 per ton to RMB 256,000 per ton within a single day, marking the largest one-day increase in nearly a decade. Prices of related cobalt products, including electrolytic cobalt and cobalt tetraoxide, also witnessed an uptick. This decision could potentially impact the DRC's cobalt export volume of 128,000 tons by 2025, transforming the global cobalt market from a surplus to a shortage of 78,000 tons.
