On June 18, 2025, the Mannheim Chamber of the Unified Patents Court (UPC) in Europe issued a statement regarding a new lawsuit filed by HFI Innovation, a subsidiary of MediaTek. The suit targets five subsidiaries of Huawei, accusing them of infringing on MediaTek's European patent EP2689624, titled "Method for Configuring Search Space of Enhanced Physical Downlink Control Channel." This patent pertains to LTE technology. This legal action is perceived as MediaTek's retaliatory measure against Huawei, which had previously sued MediaTek for patent infringement in Shenzhen in May 2024. Since then, both companies have engaged in multiple rounds of patent litigation across the globe, spanning technologies such as 4G and 5G, with no signs of de-escalation at present.
