In November 2021, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein unveiled its intentions to transition from proprietary software, notably Microsoft Windows and Office, utilized by governmental entities, to open-source alternatives like LibreOffice and Linux systems. Roughly two and a half years later, officials from the state government have affirmed that this migration plan remains active, with expectations that approximately 30,000 government computers will complete the shift by around 2027. This strategic move is aimed at curbing licensing expenses and bolstering digital sovereignty.
