Amthor, the Parliamentary State Secretary at Germany's Federal Ministry for Digitization and Modernization, has disclosed that Germany is contemplating the imposition of a 10% digital tax on major US technology companies, despite the risk of heightened trade tensions between the two nations. He emphasized that these companies circumvent tax obligations in Germany, while German enterprises confront steep tariffs in the United States. In light of this, Amthor urged the European Union (EU) to collaboratively establish a more equitable system. Furthermore, Weimer, the Federal Government Commissioner for Media and Culture, confirmed that a proposal for a digital tax is currently being formulated, and negotiations with US tech firms are actively underway. Chancellor Merz also stressed the necessity for the EU to revise its preferential policies towards US tech companies, aiming to resolve economic and trade disputes.
