Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has submitted an application to the US Department of Commerce seeking exemption from chip import tariffs in support of its $65 billion investment project in Arizona and a subsequent $100 billion expansion plan. TSMC emphasizes that the imposition of tariffs could stifle demand and undermine the competitiveness of the US semiconductor industry. Currently, TSMC's Arizona facility has completed the construction of its first fabrication plant (fab) and achieved mass production of 4nm chips, with aspirations to scale up to 2nm processes in the future. The project is anticipated to generate $200 billion in indirect economic activity and create tens of thousands of jobs. TSMC is appealing for a tax-free supply chain to ensure the seamless progression of this pivotal project.
