On April 28, Portugal faced a significant power outage that, according to the Portuguese Industrial Association, could result in economic losses exceeding €2 billion (approximately $2.28 billion) for the country's enterprises. Out of the over 1,700 businesses surveyed, an overwhelming 99% reported being affected, with 71% unable to operate normally due to the outage. Most enterprises pointed to Rede Eléctrica Nacional (REN), Portugal's national energy grid company, and Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the Spanish national grid company, as the primary entities responsible for this incident. This power outage underscores the profound impact of energy supply disruptions on economic activities and reveals the fragility of Portugal's energy system.
