On May 22, the Semiconductor Industry Association of the United States announced that a 1% increase in tariffs on semiconductor manufacturing investments would lead to a 0.64% rise in the overall cost of factory construction. Amidst a Section 232 investigation by the United States into the global semiconductor industry, the sector is pleading for relief from tariff pressures. According to the official website of the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) within the U.S. Department of Commerce, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a leading wafer foundry, and Intel, a prominent American chipmaker, submitted comments in early May. They opposed the imposition of tariffs on semiconductors, related equipment, and materials, and advocated for the support of incentive policies aimed at fostering chip production.
