In 2024, global GPU shipments witnessed a robust 6% increase, totaling 251 million units. This performance stands in stark contrast to the modest 1% growth seen in the global PC market, highlighting the GPU sector's strength. After reaching a peak of 430 million units in 2011, GPU shipments experienced a decline but rebounded between 2018 and 2020, followed by a swift recovery in 2022 post-pandemic. The landscape of GPU chip suppliers has evolved, shrinking from nearly 50 in 1998 to being largely dominated by NVIDIA and AMD. However, the entrance of Chinese vendors has rejuvenated the market, pushing the supplier count back up to over 20. During the first half of 2024, desktop discrete GPU shipments surged by 46%, but this momentum waned in the third quarter with a 9% year-on-year decline, primarily attributed to a scarcity of new products and inventory adjustments. The discrete GPU market is anticipated to remain stable in 2024 compared to 2023.
