On January 3, 2025, the School of Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering at Beihang University announced the publication of groundbreaking research findings led by Professor Zhao Weisheng in the prestigious journal 'Engineering,' the official publication of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The study, titled "Experimental Realization of a Highly Reliable and Reconfigurable Strong Physical Unclonable Function (sr-PUF) Using Spin-Orbit Torque Magnetic Random-Access Memory (SOT-MRAM)," represents a significant advancement in hardware security for edge devices in the Internet of Things (IoT).
The research introduces the first implementation of an sr-PUF based on SOT-MRAM, which not only meets near-ideal performance benchmarks but also exhibits robust resistance to attacks from machine learning models. This innovation offers a novel approach to safeguarding IoT devices against hardware security threats.
The work was supported by various projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Zhang Xiuye, a doctoral student from the 2022 intake at Beihang University, served as the lead author, with Professor Zhao Weisheng as the corresponding author.
