In compliance with antitrust directives, Meta may be compelled to 'revoke or suspend' specific functionalities of WhatsApp in India. These directives prohibit WhatsApp from sharing user data with Meta for advertising purposes, as per court documents. Meta is currently challenging a decision by India's Competition Commission of India (CCI) from November 2022, which ruled that Meta had abused its dominant market position by 'coercing' WhatsApp users into accepting a privacy policy. This policy allegedly broadened the scope of user data collection and sharing, granting Meta an unfair competitive advantage. In response, the CCI has imposed a fine of $24.5 million on Meta and instituted a five-year ban on certain practices.
