U.S. Implements New AI Chip Control Regulations, Facing Clear Opposition from NVIDIA and Oracle
2025-01-13

On January 13, the U.S. government unveiled new regulations governing the control of AI chips, placing restrictions on the computational power of chips sold by American companies to most nations. Commerce Secretary Raimondo emphasized that companies will have a 120-day window to provide feedback. Two technology behemoths, NVIDIA and Oracle, have voiced their disapproval of these measures.

NVIDIA asserted that GPU products and technologies related to data centers are ubiquitous in personal computers worldwide. Controlling these products and technologies, the company argued, would be futile, potentially sparking a global search for alternatives and undermining U.S. interests. Oracle concurred, stating that this new regulation could prove to be one of the most detrimental policies for the U.S. technology industry, slashing the market share of American companies in the global chip market by an estimated 80%.
