Xijing Hospital has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in xenotransplantation by successfully performing the world's first orthotopic liver transplant surgery, utilizing a gene-edited pig liver in a human patient. Led by Academician Dou Kefeng, this historic surgery was a collaborative effort among a multidisciplinary team of experts, who successfully implanted the genetically modified pig liver into a brain-dead patient. Post-surgery, the patient's vital signs remained stable, and liver function indicators gradually normalized. This research represents a significant advancement, offering vital theoretical and technical foundations for the future clinical application of xenotransplantation.
