India is accelerating its efforts in the domestic semiconductor industry, with plans to develop an indigenous GPU chip within approximately 24 months. The project is still in its early planning stages, and technical details and participating entities have yet to be disclosed. Meanwhile, India is pushing the commercialization of two homegrown processors—SHAKTI and VEGA—both based on the RISC-V architecture. Both have been in development for years, and multiple implementation projects featuring these processors are currently underway. Through incentive programs, India is supporting domestic chip design enterprises and bringing in international corporate partnerships to advance the construction of domestic manufacturing capabilities such as wafer fabs, with the goal of building a semiconductor ecosystem that covers the entire supply chain. In addition, Indian officials have likened the impact of AI on India's IT services industry to the Y2K issue of earlier years, believing that the deployment of enterprise-level AI applications will bring new growth opportunities. Related reports estimate that AI will drive a net increase of 2 million jobs in India's IT industry. Currently, India's semiconductor market exceeds US$50 billion and is expected to approach US$100 billion by 2030.
